Intro to Silk Screening 101
Overview
This four-hour course is designed to offer students a thorough and hands-on introduction to the many facets of silk-screen printing. Whether you are a seasoned artist/designer looking to expand your professional repertoire, or a beginner with little to no experience this class is for you. The class is taught in a commercial-grade shop, but students will learn the skills necessary to print projects in their home or studio.
Prerequisites
No previous experience is required.
Tuition
$150.00 (class enrollment caps out at 14 students per class)
Classes are held Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Materials
One outfit you don’t mind getting dirty (think like you’re dressing for a day of painting).
If you would like to print your original ONE COLOR artwork please email a high resolution file to info@worksnyc.org by the Wednesday before the class.
Optional additional $50.00 to purchase the screen with your image on it at the end of class.
Each student receives one included t-shirt print but students can print more tees, time and equity permitting.
Additional white and black Gildan tees, 8860 natural totes, and miscellaneous overage items are available for purchase on-site.
Bring your own clothing to print, or choose from available items.
Basic Schedule & Syllabus:
Introduction. Explanation of shop safety guidelines and equipment, tour of the shop.
Overview and demo of basic silk screen concepts and capabilities. Review of negative and positive images and how they apply to the silk screen process. Discussion of ink types, water based and plastisol. Review of Works in Progress print book of sample jobs.
Overview of photo emulsion and how to successfully coat a variety of screens. Lesson on mesh-count options and appropriate selection according to image being printed. Using reclaiming fluid and pressure washer.
Exposing screens using our professional equipment. Suggestions on how to expose screens when industrial units are not available. Washing out exposed screens.
12:00PM -12:30PM - BREAK
Demo and practice printing a multi-color job. Explanation of when to use flash and conveyor dryers.
Taping, setting up and printing your own one-color screen on at least one t-shirt provided.
Additional units are allowed, time permitted. You can bring your own items to print, or purchase overages at wholesale cost when available.
In-depth Q&A, distribution of suppliers list and home set up instructions. Clean-up.
