Works in Progress NYC is a full-service silk screening and graphic design company as well as a not for profit organization working with high school students on internships providing job readiness and the real world of work experience.
Our organization is dedicated to creating hands-on and meaningful internships for NYC high school students. With creativity, quality and service to the community as the cornerstones of our organization, Works in Progress strives to expose interns to the many aspects of a socially responsible small business. In cooperation with Works in Progress, teachers, and print shop employees our interns learn to deliver professionally designed and printed garments to a variety of organizations, schools, museums, and businesses.
Founded as Design East in 1983, sculptor Emily Clark and painter Jon Millstein opened what would become Works in Progress NYC in a small storefront on the border of the East Village and the Lower East Side. Selling one-of-a-kind, hand-painted shirts, Jon and Emily rapidly became well known for their creative, artistic and high quality silk-screened graphic designs. The business grew quickly and in 1990 moved to its current location in today’s Fourth Arts Block. Works in Progress continues to deliver creativity, quality workmanship and unparalleled customer service to organizations across the five boroughs and beyond.
